Sansai Studio
Kyo-Yuzen Kyoto

From Stencil Shadows to Wooden Light

Kyoto has carried millenniums of history. In its Saiin district, rivers once held vibrant dyed silks from Kyo-Yuzen. Behind those colors stood stencils, the hidden blueprint of over twenty steps in kimono making. Sansai Studio began in 1994 as a workshop carving these patterns into persimmon-tanned paper. Artisans etched thousands of motifs day after day. But as kimono faded from daily life, silence settled. They turned back to the act of carving itself. From paper to wood, the craft found new ground.

Precision Meets Light

Sansai Studio's heart lies in carving where 0.1 millimeters cannot stray. Traditional small knives meet digital precision. Thousands of designs, archived over fifteen years, now cut into timber with laser light. Their signature is bokashi, the soft gradation of Kyo-Yuzen. Lasers vary depth for three-dimensional shading on wood, once thought impossible. Not burning, but sculpting. Hand-painted color and glass coating finish each vessel, carrying yuzen's elegance and wood's warmth together.

Father and Son in Harmony

Founder Hiroshi Sako, a Kyoto Master Craftsman, holds half a century in his fingertips. Beside him stands Kazuhisa Sako, once a systems engineer, translating tradition into digital terms. Hand and machine resonate without conflict. "We preserve not the paper, but the spirit and skill of design," they hold. This guides their workshop too, building space where artisans work as humans. From kimono's shadows, they now craft as makers themselves. Passion moves quietly through each piece.

Beauty Returns to the Table

Sansai Studio sees yuzen not for special days alone, but daily tables. Beauty once locked in chests now sits for touch and use. Their gaze crosses to New York streets and world homes. Traditional motifs gain digital wings. Beyond production lines, they connect with global senses. A century on, Japan's aesthetic will breathe in lives everywhere. This is the landscape they carve ahead.
