Craft With Memory
Behind every piece is a place.
A hillside kiln. A hidden weaving village. A slow, practiced gesture passed down through generations.
Atelier Japan connects you to these stories, not just as objects, but as cultural companions for life.
-
Timeless
Each piece we curate carries quiet elegance, made to live with you, not shout for attention.
-
Unique
Every item is selected for its story, crafted in place by skilled hands, and made to last a lifetime.
-
Considered
We support regional craftspeople, preserve fading traditions, and invest in sustainable partnerships.
Our Founders
Johnny Pawlik and Masatsugu Kuno met at University in Oxford in 2008 and formed a lasting friendship grounded in shared values and a respect for Japanese craftsmanship.
Over the following years, their careers developed in complementary directions. Johnny built his work in international marketing and brand strategy, focused on bringing culturally rich businesses to global audiences. Masa developed deep expertise in Japanese retail and operations, working closely with makers and understanding the realities of producing and selling craft.
In 2015, while travelling through Kyoto together, they recognised a growing challenge. Many traditional workshops, often family-run for generations, were facing decline due to demographic change and limited access to international markets.
Atelier Japan was created in response.
The business brings together Johnny’s international perspective and Masa’s grounding in Japanese retail to support makers in a practical and sustainable way. Nearly a decade on, they have launched 4 retail stores and created countless international events.
By connecting craftsmanship with a global audience, Atelier Japan aims to ensure these traditions continue with relevance and integrity for the next generation.
