In the wood-crafting capital of Tokushima, where seven decades of artisan memory flow through the hands of Mori Kougei, a forgotten remnant of the timber world has found its rebirth. For generations, when the finest oaks were sliced thin as paper to face exquisite furniture, a dense, resilient core of solid wood remained—the Tsuki-jiri, hidden away in the shadows of the workshop floor, discarded yet flawless. This plate brings that silent timber into the light, transforming a rustic afterthought into an elegant centerpiece. For this piece, the surface of the Japanese oak becomes a canvas for master sculptor Masahiro Ikawa (Horisho III), who meticulously hand-carves the wood with his chisels. His intentional, rhythmic strokes etch a tactile texture reminiscent of gentle ripples on a sacred river, ensuring that no two plates share the same soul. The carved plate is then immersed in natural Tadeai (indigo), dyed through the traditional Hakkou-date fermentation process. This deep indigo bath pools beautifully within the chiseled ridges, casting dramatic shadows while coaxing out the oak’s hidden "tiger-stripe" figures (Torafu). The crests of the hand-carved ripples catch the light, shimmering like sunbeams breaking through deep water. To protect this delicate union of sculpture and earth, a high-performance ceramic topcoat is applied, shielding the wood while preserving its organic, silken texture for the modern table.
