In the wood-crafting capital of Tokushima, where seven decades of artisan memory flow through the hands of Mori Kougei, a forgotten remnant of the timber world has found its rebirth. For generations, when the finest oaks were sliced thin as paper to face exquisite furniture, a dense, resilient core of solid wood remained—the Tsuki-jiri, hidden away in the shadows of the workshop floor, discarded yet flawless. This plate brings that silent timber into the light, transforming a rustic afterthought into an elegant centerpiece. Crafted from Japanese oak, the wood features a flat, smooth finish that allows the innate, enduring strength of the grain to speak for itself. It is then meticulously immersed in natural Tadeai (indigo), dyed through the traditional Hakkou-date fermentation process. The deep indigo bath coaxes out the oak’s hidden "tiger-stripe" figures (Torafu), which catch the light and shimmer like sunbeams breaking through deep water. To protect this delicate union of earth and craft, a high-performance ceramic topcoat is applied, shielding the wood while preserving its silken, natural texture for the modern table.
