After being urged by the Emperor in the late 1500s to promote hand fans and grow Kyoto’s economy, Komaruya began crafting its inspiring collection of hand fans. Every Komaruya fan is crafted with extreme care by artisans using techniques from as early as the 900s. An individual fan often takes more than a year to be created.

Each type of fan would traditionally be favoured by a different member of Japanese society from Geisha’s and Samurai to members of the Imperial Court. Today Komaruya’s masterful designs make for an impressive and beautiful addition to welcome a piece of Japan to any space.
